Frequently asked questions
Quick answers about appointments, insurance, treatments, conditions, telehealth, and records.
Appointments
How do I schedule my first appointment?
Use our new patient intake form. You'll be matched with a physician and contacted to schedule.
How quickly can I be seen?
Timing varies; it depends on matching you with the right psychiatrist and on clinician availability. We contact you to schedule as soon as we can, and urgent or inpatient cases are prioritized.
What should I bring to my first appointment?
A list of current medications and dosages, names of previous mental-health providers, and your insurance card.
Can I see a specific physician?
Yes. Request your physician of choice on the intake form. We'll do our best to match, or suggest similar physicians if your first choice is booked.
Insurance
Do you take my insurance?
Check our insurance page for the current payer list. It includes both in-network and not-in-network plans, and we verify your specific benefits before scheduling.
How does billing work?
We bill your insurance directly after each visit. You're responsible for any copay or deductible per your specific plan.
What if my insurance changes?
Let us know as soon as possible. We'll re-verify benefits before your next appointment.
Do you offer self-pay?
Yes. Published rates available on request. We provide superbills you can submit for out-of-network reimbursement.
Treatments
What treatments do you offer?
Medication management, psychotherapy, TMS, Spravato, IM and IV ketamine, ECT, inpatient care, day-treatment referrals, and eating-disorder treatment.
Do you offer therapy without medication?
Our practice is composed of physicians. Many of our psychiatrists practice psychotherapy alongside medication management. Standalone weekly therapy slots are limited. We can collaborate with an outside therapist and recommend ways to find one.
How do I know if I need TMS, ketamine, or ECT?
These treatments are usually considered when two or more adequate antidepressant trials have not helped enough, but the choice also depends on diagnosis, urgency, medical history, prior response, insurance, and your preference. A BPA psychiatrist reviews those trade-offs with you; treatment is not assigned by a formula or at a fixed visit number.
Who do you treat?
Bay Psychiatric Associates treats adults. Contact us with specific questions about fit, and we will match you to the right physician.
Will I be in a private room for ketamine treatment?
Yes. Every Spravato, IM ketamine, and IV ketamine treatment at BPA takes place in a comfortable private room. You do not share the room with other patients. Your clinical team provides the monitoring required for your treatment while preserving that privacy.
Does BPA offer ketamine-assisted psychotherapy?
Yes. KAP is available on a limited basis with Kaila Compton, Nick Baker, and Kari Barnes. Their training and interests include psychedelic-informed care. In this dedicated psychotherapy format, the clinician typically remains with you throughout the ketamine session so thoughts, emotions, or insights can be explored as they arise. Each clinician's approach is a little different.
Conditions
What conditions do you treat?
Depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, ADHD, OCD, PTSD, eating disorders, postpartum mental health, and treatment-resistant cases. See our conditions page.
Do you treat ADHD?
Yes, including evaluation and ongoing management. Several of our physicians specialize in adult ADHD.
Do you offer eating-disorder treatment?
Yes, outpatient treatment with a multidisciplinary team, and coordination with higher levels of care when needed.
Telehealth
Can I do appointments via video?
Most medication-management and therapy visits are available by secure video. TMS, Spravato, IM and IV ketamine, and ECT require in-person visits.
What platform do you use?
A HIPAA-compliant video platform integrated with our EMR. You'll receive a link before each appointment.
Can my first visit be telehealth?
In most cases yes. Some physicians prefer an in-person first visit; we'll let you know in advance.
Privacy & records
Is my information confidential?
Yes. Psychiatric records are protected by HIPAA and California state law. We do not share information without your written consent except where legally required.
Can my employer see my records?
No. Employer-sponsored insurance plans only see billing codes (diagnosis codes), not clinical notes.
How do I request my records?
Contact us through the patient portal or by phone. We process records requests within 15 business days.
