Kaila Compton, MD, PhD
- Berkeley Site Lead Physician of Interventional Psychiatry
About Dr. Compton
I work with adults across the continuum of psychiatric care, from people experiencing severe depression or psychiatric crisis to those who feel stuck in a difficult pattern or stage of life.
My approach is individualized and integrative. Depending on each person’s needs, treatment may include psychotherapy, psychiatric medication, ketamine and other interventional treatments, along with supportive practices such as meditation, movement, and dietary change. I have been a member of Berkeley Psychiatric Associates since 2009 and work in both hospital and outpatient settings.
A particular focus of my practice is Ketamine Treatment. Ketamine and other psychedelic medicines under development offer promising new approaches to mental health care and may help people move beyond longstanding patterns of thought and emotion. Because treatment in an altered state of consciousness can be a vulnerable experience, I place great importance on safety, trust, preparation, and support throughout the process.
Before attending medical school, I earned a PhD in Social Anthropology from Harvard University. My work with nomadic communities and war refugees in Africa and Europe focused on trauma, storytelling, and psychological resilience. I later attended the UC Berkeley–UCSF Joint Medical Program, where I focused on Native American mental health. I completed my psychiatry residency at UCSF. I subsequently trained in psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy and participate in clinical research involving psychedelic medicines.
I grew up in Southern California and have lived in New England, New Mexico, Europe, and Africa. Outside of work, I enjoy music, dance, scuba diving, art, and travel.
