Revitalizing Psychiatry

Ever get tired of the ongoing discussions about depression? The same old, same old about what causes it, and what you should do to feel better? Add to that the stigma surrounding mental health in society and it’s no wonder those who suffer might be reluctant to reach out for help.

It’s time to change the conversation surrounding mental health in order to move forward in compassion and understanding. This kind of thinking can help lift the stigma surrounding depression and other common mental illnesses. Therefore, we need to be re-energizing, strengthening, and revitalizing psychiatry and that’s the exact focus of the 2019 APA’s annual meeting.

Disrupt, Include, Engage & Innovate

This week is the 2019 American Psychiatric Association’s annual meeting in San Francisco. A meeting of renowned psychiatrists from around the world uniting to discuss the latest research and newest technologies that can help revitalize psychiatry.

Disrupt The Stigma

Unfortunately, stigma is still a major hurdle in getting people the care they need. Education and awareness can help change the conversation about mental health by removing the embarrassment and shame some people might experience. Supporting others and listening to their mental health concerns can help society move forward in compassion and better understanding.

Focus On Your Wellness

Part of being inclusive is to make your mental health a priority, too! Be aware of your own feelings, thoughts, and emotions. Further, remember that mental illnesses like depression are diseases of the brain and should be treated as such. And just like a physical illness, you need to be treated in order to attain relief.

Innovative Treatments For Wellness

As the APA celebrates 175 years, it’s energizing to look back and see the developments in psychiatry over the past decades. Developments such as TMS therapy have helped the millions of patients being treated for depression find relief when antidepressant medications don’t work or cause unwanted side effects.

At Bay Psychiatric Associates, we use innovative, interventional treatments that provide a safe and effective alternative to medication. Our clinical team engages through weekly clinical rating scales to measure each patient’s progress during and after treatment. Notably, of our first 750 patients, over 80% of our patients had a response to TMS therapy while 95% of our patients received minimal or no relief from 4 or more antidepressants.

TMS therapy is just one of the ways we continue the mission of revitalizing psychiatry. Truly, we’ve come a long way over the past 175 years, but there’s still work to be done.
