Interventional Psychiatry: Tools Toward Achieving Full Remission of Depression
Despite decades of research, standard pharmacologic and psychotherapeutic treatments are not fully effective for many patients with psychiatric disorders. Many patients we see remain partially responsive or unresponsive to medication or are unable to tolerate their side effects. Many also experience less than full recovery from psychotherapy. Fortunately, we have several other options that are often effective for these patients. Bay Psychiatric Associates' Interventional Psychiatry Treatment-Resistant Depression Options

"I've suffered from depression for the entirety of my adolescence and adult life. I had tried several medications and had been in therapy for years, which helped to a certain extent, but I was still not healthy. About halfway through my [TMS] treatment, I noticed my symptoms disappearing. This treatment completely changed (saved) my life. It is a gradual process that takes place over the entire treatment, but the change is almost unbelievable. I am in complete remission now, about 5 months since finishing treatment. For the first time in my adult life, I actually feel that I want to be alive and continue living. I finally feel like I enjoy my life and consciousness. Every experience feels like it is new, and I'm so grateful that I had the chance to try TMS. I'm happier now than I can ever remember being. Also, the staff is wonderful."

"I am an attorney, an educator, and a youth advocate. I have suffered with depression since I was a teenager. As time went on, I was avoiding people and relationships, I became a recluse, and I was unable to sustain most employment. I decided to try TMS Therapy because nothing else seemed to effectively address my depression and suicidality. When I started TMS, I began noticing more energy and a willingness to leave my home. Now, I have more energy, fewer deeply depressed days, and increased interaction with others."

"I am a 48 year old man, with interests in art, photography, literature, and history. I experienced my first episode of depression in my early twenties, and it made life very difficult. I first heard about TMS when my doctor suggested it and described it as working like antidepressants, without side effects. When I started TMS, I first noticed less anxiety and my sense of humor returning, particularly in the last two weeks of treatment. Now I feel better and can engage with people more effectively."

I've experienced intermittent depression since childhood. Despite earning a master’s degree and helping others in my career, I struggled to find joy. After about two weeks of TMS treatment, I started having joyful dreams and feeling more optimistic. I completed my 36 sessions and feel better equipped to navigate life's ups and downs. I can honestly say I’ve had no negative effects from the treatment and have greatly appreciated the caring staff at the clinic.

I think the first changes I noticed came after 2 weeks. I was feeling down and had been for many months, a kind of bipolar down I guess -- searching for purpose in my life, withdrawing. After two weeks or so, I became peppier, more lively, less weary. After 4 weeks, I may have drifted into an active state: up, ready, the confident and perhaps overconfident self I know as my usual personality. That upbeat mood lasted a couple of weeks. That said, it may still be too early to say what's 'different' so far. I will say that knowing there are alternatives to meds is welcome.
